Product Review: Maine Beer Company

July 30, 2013

Every time I venture back to New Hampshire I do a few things: I see my family, see my friends, and go to Trader Joe’s.  I grab a few food items here and there depending on what I plan on cooking that week, but more importantly I grab a bunch of beer and wine.  At this point I’ve locked down a few wines from there that have become stalwarts in our apartment.  This way I’m always prepared for guests, or prepared to get drunk; to be honest it’s probably a mix of the two.

Most recently I picked up a beer from the Maine Beer Company based out of Portland, Maine originally, but now Freeport, Maine, called Peeper Ale.  Since I’m originally from New Hampshire the name obviously appealed to me, and after checking out the description I was sold.

Peeper Ale. Go buy one right now.

This beer is fantastic.  I could go into the details of it, but I’ll let the creators do that (http://www.mainebeercompany.com/maine-beer/peeper/). I’m struggling to recall a beer I’ve had in recent months that I enjoyed nearly as much as Peeper Ale.  It’s local, it’s fresh, and it’s delicious.  Let’s take a second to learn a little more about the creators of this wonderful beverage.

After spending time searching through the Maine Brewing Company site I realized it was lacking one thing- an about section.  So, between their Facebook page, website, and an interview found on www.theforcaster.net here’s what I was able to piece together about the brewery and its creators.

Maine Beer Company was founded in 2009 by two brothers, Dave and Dan Kleban.  Dan and Dave both left their careers, as an attorney and financial analyst respectively, to start the Maine Beer Company.  Their beer, and company, is hipster at heart; a fact that is only confirmed by the awards section on their Facebook page “Not what we are about.”  Dan and Dave base their entire company on one philosophy, “We make beers we like to drink, that’s rule number one.”

Dan and Dave seem to avoid the spotlight and choose to have their beer do the talking.  Maybe this is the reason I connect with this beer and company as much as I do.  They’re passionate about their work and make incredible products.  That’s a recipe for success.

Maine Beer Company beer can be found in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland/DC, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia and Vermont.  To learn more check out http://www.mainebeercompany.com or head up to their brewery in Freeport, Maine.  I know the next time I head up to Maine the Maine Beer Company brewery will be my first stop.
